Addax Petroleum Clubs Steal Show At 2021 Rugby Championships

The 2021 Rugby Season in Cameroon has ended with the major clubs in the competition having battled for the two trophies that were up for grabs – The Championship and Cup of Cameroon accolades.

Playing at the Presidential Guard Stadium in Melen, Yaoundé, on Saturday July 24, 2021, the men’s Addax Petroleum Rugby Club of Douala faced Espoir Rugby Club of Yaoundé in rivalry for the Cup of Cameroon Finals. It was one of the highlights of the day and got off to a fiery start with Espoir taking the first three points of the encounter after scoring a penalty inside the first five minutes. The game then entered into a tense mood with Addax Petroleum trying to draw level, but Espoir instead increased their advantage and scored three more points. By half time, Espoir were up by three points.

After the break, the Addax Petroleum team of coach, Valentine Sammey, improved on their tactics and won three penalties to take advantage. But that did not last as Espoir drew level with just less than a minute to go. The game ended 15 points apiece and the two had to settle for penalties during which Espoir of Yaoundé defeated Addax Male Rugby Team 4-3 to be declared Champions of the Cup of Cameroon.

Two weeks earlier, Addax Petroleum Male Team had won the Championship finals by beating Yaoundé University Club YUC 16 -9 at the Mateco Sports Complex. It should be recalled that Addax Petroleum Rugby Club have dominated the male Rugby competitions for the past five years.

In the female category, Addax Petroleum ladies humiliated Nfon Dreams Academy of Yaoundé 27 – 0 in the finals of the Cup of Cameroon. The Dragon ladies who had dominated the domestic season proved their superiority by scoring 20 points in the first half with no reply from their opponents. After the break, they added 7 more points from a drop and a penalty transformed to make it 27-0 and be crowned Cup of Cameroon Champions. More than 80 percent of the players who participated in the last African Championships in Burkina Faso for the Rugby National Team came from the female team of Addax Petroleum.
