Two delayed regional league matches scheduled for Wednesday, March 13 at the Buea Town Municipal Stadium saw the University of Buea football club fall to the hands of Prisons football club by one goal to nothing.
The second match sparked a lot of controversy in a game that featured Catholic University SA and EEMSA.
Just after the first quarter of the match, the University boys took the lead but five minutes later, EEMSA struck back. The game was still fair and square until a free kick was awarded at the far right of EEMSA’s goal. A pure strike of the ball saw goalkeeper Ashu Francis of Catholic University at full length but with the ball in the net. The referee pointed to the centre circle in total disagreement with the entire university team. The players raged towards assistant referee in a bid to complain about a hole in the side netting from which they claim the ball passed through. As a result of the referee’s decision that the goal stands, Coach Brandon Samuel ordered his players out of the pitch after just 38 minutes of play.
The game was on hold for a little over 40 minutes before the University players stepped back on to the pitch but only after the referee had collected the match form to sign. However, after another discussion that lasted about five minutes, the game continued but only as the second half. Catholic University now had a mountain to climb, but dug deep to pull out a 2-2 draw before the final whistle blast.
While many blame the officials for not checking the nets before kick-off, others blame the players and coach for leaving the pitch in anger but it all boils down to the point of lack of professionalism, in the manner with which football stakeholders in the region carry out the business.
