What Are Officials Hiding In Buea Central Prison –Ayah Paul Asks

by Atlantic Chronicles

PA Ayah was at the Buea main prison on Saturday, August 31, 2019, with raw food for some detained family relations and clients. He was turned back at the barrier and directed to a ‘white umbrella’ where all foods are entrusted to the prison authorities who register same and then taken to the beneficiaries by themselves. This had so been because, since the last ‘prison riots’, access to the inmates has been barred and so still is it.

As the registration was going on, some officer called PA Ayah aside and explained that visits even by lawyers were not permitted in the week following the riots as the prisoners, after all, were no longer brought up to the courts during the period. At the end of that week, he went on, lawyers had had unfettered access to their clients during working hours. I was, however, insistent that I, in the company of another lawyer, was denied access when we called. The officer was insistent that any penitentiary officer doing so was not in compliance with any official policy; and that, whatever the case, even the general restriction of access would most probably be over in the week ahead.

As it is, the fact stands that, since the so-called riots, even food intended for the inmates has had to be sent through the warders – another way of saying the prison has been out of bounds ever since then.

What it is the authorities are keeping from public knowledge must be something grievous and ugly. It can only lend credence to newspaper reports of fatalities during the riots. Or again, such machinations have been put in place in the hope of obliterating the scars of brutal repression!
