Buea Council has adopted a draft budget of 2.5 Billion for the 2019 financial year. This was during a twin council session; the examination of the 2017 administrative, management and stores management accounts, as well as the adoption of the 2019 draft budget on December 18 held at the Buea Council Hall.
At the session, the Mayor of Buea Council, Patrick Ekema Esunge disclosed that the Council’s draft budget for 2019 has been placed at 2.5 billion, thus witnessing an increase of over 241 million as compared to that of the previous year, which stood at over 2.25 Billion. The percentage increase for 2019 therefore stood at 10.71.
In his speech, Mayor Ekema boasted that unlike other Municipalities around Buea that are folding up due to the Anglophone crisis and its untold hardship, they at the Buea Council have steered things towards the right direction and have continued to survive.
Speaking to the press about the Council’s priority projects, the Mayor said they will focus more on hygiene and sanitation especially as the company in charge recently pulled out of Buea, due to repeated attacks on its personnel and equipment.
The Mayor also went on to say that one of the major projects for the municipality, will be the building of 50 market sheds at Wotutu. He said the Council will in the coming year, also recruit scores of young people, in order to reduce the unemployment situation in the town. But (The Minister in charge of decentralisation gave an order forbidding Mayors from recruiting workers, until Municipal elections are conducted.)
He said in the health domain, they have a project to construct and equip a VIP Ward at the regional hospital annex in Buea. He said the Council will also acquire heavy-duty equipment.
Ekema Shifts Blame of Attempted Assassination From Fako CPDM Elite, To Enemies ‘Within The House’
Talking about an incident that led to a gun brawl involving him and other collaborators in a hotel In Douala, Mayor Ekema declared that;
“It has come to our notice that part of our delima (dilemma) comes from within the house. It is no longer a secret that, amongst ourselves information filters to detractors, a case in point was in broad daylight, the Mayor, two Councillors and a friend of the Council suffered an attack in Douala on 24/09/2018 geared towards assassination.
After the said incident, Mayor Ekema had accused Fako CPDM elites whom he said masterminded the attack, after he (Ekema) revealed some truths at the launch of the CPDM rally at Mountain hotel Buea. It is not known, whether the enemies ‘within’ that the Mayor heaped the blame on at the Council session work with the accused elite, or are independent going by the Ekema’s conspiracy theory of what befell him.
