Southwest Regional Championship 2020 Set, Running

(Buea-Cameroon) The tussle to succeed Public Works Department (PWD) Kumba, as Champion of the Southwest Regional Championship kicked-off Sunday, January 12, 2020.

The lively Limbe Community Field welcomed football lovers, stakeholders, and sympathisers of the Southwest Regional League. Limbe teams were given the opportunity to launch the competition, hosting a total of Seven Clubs ceded in two pools C &D. The fixtures were as follows;

NQSA 1 vs Victoria United 1

LIFCA 1 vs Options Sports Academy 1

Two times regional champions and representative of the Southwest Region in the national playoffs, Best Stars Academy played host to city rivals Isle of Hope Sports Academy in the first encounter. The boys of Coach Saturin Djeufack were stunned at the blast of the final whistle as ISOHSA came out victorious with a wonderful 2-0 margin.

The second game saw the academicians of Njalla Quan Sports Academy battle legendary Victoria United alias One People, One Power (OPOPO). Coach Edwin Teteh’s young team proved stubborn for the experienced OPOPO as they began knocking from all corners, and finally opened scores in the first sediment. The youthful exuberance of NQSA failed during the second half of the encounter as Victoria United mounted pressure and got a consolatory penalty that was converted by OPOPO’s skipper, Joseph.

The third and final game of the launching saw Limbe Football Club Association (LIFCA) clash with the newly-promoted side Options Sports Academy. Barely three minutes into the game Options SA opened score the score sheet, sending warning signals to the big money spenders LIFCA, but their patience and calm nature paid off with an equalizer that saw the encounter end in a stalemate, 1-1.

After day one fixtures some fans were bitter with the officiating and became hostile towards the men in black (referees). Some suggested that the league be taken to a better infrastructure found in the seaside resort of Limbe, so as to get the best out of the players and savor Champagne football.

Future Soccer Stars was on standby in group C and will be in action on day 2. A victory and two draws were recorded with a total of six goals scored in the Limbe zone. To complete day one fixtures, more games will come up on Wednesday, January 15 in Buea, Tiko, and Kumba.
