COVID-19 Prevention: CHRDA Creates Hand-washing Points In Water-Deficient Buea

by Atlantic Chronicles

The Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa, CHRDA, has created hand-washing points in Southwest’s Regional capital, Buea, in response to the COVID-19 health pandemic.

“CHRDA, in response to the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, established some hand-washing points in strategic positions in Buea Municipality, Southwest Region of Cameroon. These washing points aim to encourage the general population to develop the culture of sanitation both in their homes and public places,” said CHRDA Director, Barrister Agbor Nkongho.

This was during an outreach campaign organised by the organisation on Friday, March 27 to sensitise and educate residents on the preventive measures to take, in order to avoid getting infected with Covid-19.

On the message passed to the people by his team, Barrister Agbor Nkongho, said, “people were encouraged by the CHRDA team to habitually wash their hands up to the elbow with water and soap, and that they should always use their alcoholic-based hand sanitizers in case there is no water and soap so that potential germs or viruses can be killed.”

As one of the measures to sensitise the populace, flyers carrying messages of preventive measures were also distributed to the population, especially taxi drivers, to boost the spread of messages on preventive measures used in combating the spread of COVID-19.

Some of the preventive measures propagated during the CHRDA campaign include:

1. Wash your hands frequently with water and soap

2. Maintain social distancing in public places (stay at least one meter away from another person)

3. Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth

4. Practice respiratory hygiene: This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately.

5. Stay safe and avoid crowded places

6. Be aware of COVID-19 development around the world

7. If you have fever, cough and breathing difficulty, seek medical care early

8. Stay informed and follow advice given by your healthcare provider.

The establishment of the hand-washing points by the rights organisation in Buea comes at a time when potable water has been a major challenge in the city due to consistent power cuts.

Some inhabitants of the city were already worried about how they were going to implement recommended basic hygiene measures such as hand-washing to prevent the Coronavirus, when they don’t have potable water in their homes.
