In the past 48 hours, a total of 390 migrants have been rescued off the Libyan coast. This is according to a record released yesterday by the International Organization for Migration in Libya.

The emigrants, among them women and children feared death on the Libyan coast, in an attempt to cross the Mediterranean towards European shores.

The IOM stressed on the fact that no migrant should be returned to Libya. However, the corporation dispatched a team to assists asylum seekers at anchor points. Since the ARAB Spring protests of 2011 and the civil war in October 2014, Libya has recorded massive internal displacement due to instability and violence negatively affecting the country.

This insecurity has downplayed on her resources, basic services and economic output. Records from the IOM confirm close to four thousand internally displaced persons in Libya. The syndicate also holds that a few days ago, more than nine thousand migrants, including women and children, had been rescued and returned to Libya.

The body also affirms that 196 migrants died and 275 others went missing on the Central Mediterranean route this year. For most of the internally displaced communities, including people displaced since the onset of the crisis in 2011, there is no immediate probability for return, given the prevailing inter-community tensions. Libya has become a preferred departure point for immigrants who venture to cross the Mediterranean towards European shores.
