An operation by separatist fighters of the Fako Mountain Lions group, on the night of January 29, 2024, in Buea, Southwest region of Cameroon, claimed at least one confirmed life. Four vehicles were also burnt by the fighters who said they were out to reinforce their instituted Monday ghost towns.
The gunmen in videos shot at the scenes of the attack said they belonged to the Fako Mountain Lions group of ‘general Sagat’, a separatist commander operating in Fako Division. The fighters also threatened to do more, if the Buea population keeps disregarding the calls for Monday ghost towns to be respected. They also went on the hurl threats aimed at dissuading people from coming out and celebrating Youth Day, which falls on the 11th of February.
In a propaganda video shot and posted on their social media channels, the fighters were seen parading the streets at Checkpoint Buea, and towards the Central Market area, specifically around the Catholic Co-cathedral area. There, a body could be seen on the road, beside two cars that had been set on fire. The one confirmed victim of the attack has been identified as a certain Derick Mosunge.
At the Buea Regional Hospital, the Director, Dr Martin Mokake said they received one corpse, an adult male, at about midnight. The victim sustained cuts and some burns.
