The CDC statement furthered that; – “the assailants stormed the Camp Six residential quarters in Sonne, along the Tiko Douala road and attacked workers who dared to resume work at the Sonne/Likomba Estate. Five (5) Tappers were seriously beaten while the tractor driver’s face was battered with a machete. Meanwhile two (2) Overseers and two (2) Headmen were carted away and have not returned as at press time. This is the second time workers in this Estate have been assaulted by armed men right where they live with their families after a similar incident in January 2nd this year”.

The statement also revealed that workers who were severely injured are presently receiving medical attention at the CDC Cottage Hospital in Tiko.

During a field visit by reporters in July 2019, Ekambi Edwin, Agricultural Quality Manager at the Tiko Banana Group recounted that the crisis has tremendously hindered their work. He said the numerous attacks on workers in the plantations, the maiming and mutilation of workers’ fingers, has forced activities in the 3715 hectares farms operated by the CDC to stop. He said work at the CDC, has largely been reduced to that at the office level.

The grounding of activities at the plantations has also resulted in 6822 workers going for more than a year without salary.
