The National Communication Council and the Regional Delegation of the Ministry of Communication for the Southwest Region have urged media practitioners in the Region to exercise fairness, credibility and impartiality in their reporting of the Senatorial Election billed for Sunday, March 12.
This was on Tuesday, March 7, at the conference hall of the Southwest Regional Delegation of Communication in Buea.
According to Serge Ngando, Member of the NCC, journalists reporting within this election period should do so responsibly. He reminded journalists about the laws that have been put in place to guide them to report objectively and accurately.
“What we have to have in mind is to do the work with impartiality, objectivity, balance and responsibility,” Serge Ngando said.
The NCC and ELECAM distributed some handbooks to journalists to help do their reporting. “We are asking journalists to have in mind that principles and guidelines are there to permit them to do the work properly,” Serge Ngando said, adding that journalists will be monitored at national and regional levels to ensure that they are doing the right thing.

Meanwhile, the Regional Delegate of Communication, Muma Rosette Bih, called on all the journalists to be very vigilant and smart enough to carry out what she termed civic responsibility.
“We are operating in an atmosphere of high tension,” she said. “We don’t know who is who and for our own safety, and those around us, we just need to be very vigilant.”
The training enabled journalists to ask questions pertaining to their safety and what is expected of them during the elections.
