After suffering heavy defeats in their first three games, last season’s champions of the Southwest Regional Championship, Victoria United FC, alias OPOPO, finally secured its first win.
The OPOPO boys clinched their first win, by defeating city rivals, Njalla Quan Sports Academy, NQSA, in one of the day five fixtures of the Championship.
The Limbe side has been facing administrative issues since the departure of its former President, Thomas Ndive, who was elected President of Southwest FECAFOOT. This compelled him to relinquish his position as President of OPOPO as stated in FECAFOOT’s electoral code. Prince Eric Motande was given the opportunity to take the baton of command, a duty he acknowledged was not going to be easy.
The championship commenced with OPOPO on standby in day 1. Moving to match day 2, the team was absent from action, as they boycotted.
On day 3, it was a clash of two Limbe sides, Isle of Hope Sports Academy (ISOSHA) shocking the fans of Victoria United as she inflicted the first defeat of the season 4-2 on OPOPO. Day 4 was another bad experience for the 2016 Cameroon Cup Semi-finalist, as CINYODEV FA defeated the team at her own backyard by 4 goals to zero.
That was the last straw on the Carmel’s back, as Joseph Mbock Maput threw in the towel, resigning from his position as Head Coach of the club. “OPOPO remains a club close to my heart, I want to give an opportunity for another to handle the coaching position of the club.” He said
In day 5, OPOPO visited city rivals, Njalla Quan Sports Academy. The representative of the SW Region in the 2018 National play-offs impressed their fans with their first victory of the season as they narrowly urged NQSA 2-1.
