(Buea-Cameroon) Over 600 graduates from Biaka University Institute of Buea, BUIB, were on November 8, during a graduation ceremony that took place at the BUIB campus in Buea, urged to be different.

The call was made by the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, VC, Dr. Francisca Hongla Biaka, in her address to the 19th batch of graduates from the chiefly-medical institution.

The 613 graduates, drawn from the Schools of Health Sciences and Management Sciences, felt exultant in their robes as some were awarded Diplomas and others Bachelor Degrees in their respective fields.

Francisca Hongla Biaka, in her address, assured the public that the graduates have been refined in line with the institution’s motto, “The Audacity to be Different,” so that they meet societal needs. She noted that the institution has been working to attain its goal: to promote high-level specialisation which is absent in most institutions, even at the Post Graduate level.

According to statistics, the School of Health Sciences graduated 560 students, awarding Bachelor Degrees to 203 students, Diplomas to 275 others; while 82 students were graduated under the Ministry of Public Health as State-registered employees. In the School of Management Sciences, all 49 students were awarded Bachelor Degrees.

In all, there were seven students with first-class Bachelor Degrees, who were from the fields of Nursing Science, Medical Laboratory Science and Accounting.

Among them was Ategha Bens Fuh, the best graduating student with a Grade Point Average, GPA, of 3.70. In his address, Ategha called on his fellow graduates to be positive thinkers wherever they would go.

He was closely followed by the best female graduating student, with a first-class degree in Nursing Science, Gladys Igoneb Teburg.

The administration of BUIB charged the graduates to enrol into their Post Graduate programmes (MSc), in the Management and Health Sciences, which have been newly-launched alongside the School of Education for undergraduates.

He further admonished the graduates to be good communicators, update their knowledge of the world, learn from challenges and take the future into their hands.

In an oath-taking ceremony, conducted by respective professional associations, graduates from the fields of Medical Laboratory Science, Nursing and Midwifery, pledged to preserve patients’ dignity, abstain from malpractices, not administer harmful drugs, collaborate with other health personnel, and to remain committed to the wellbeing of others.

The Pro-Chancellor of BUIB, Prof. James D. Portwood; the Consul General for the Southwest and Northwest Regions, H.E Ibrahim Mohammed Bashir; the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Buea (represented); administrative officials, and academic personnel of partner universities, graced the occasion with their presence. Some 20 outstanding graduates were awarded prizes for being outstanding in the Higher National Diploma, HND, exams of their respective fields.
