“For almost a year now, the South West North West Women’s Task Force has been carrying out initiatives to decry ongoing violence in the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon, while calling for an end to hostilities. As a result of their overwhelming pain, women can no longer live normal lives.
Peace (both spiritual and physical) has become an expensive commodity in both regions. No one is safe. Little children who are our most precious resource are exposed to violence every day and as mothers, we do not have the capacity to protect them in schools, which have been turned into battlegrounds.
In view of this complete disharmony in the trend of our day to day lives, we find it incongruent on our part to think of being part of celebrations, which do not offer us the concrete solutions we want for a stable society; in which women can work to achieve parity in the political, economic, social and cultural domains. It is in this light that the South West North West Women’s Task Force declares very firmly that we will not be part of celebrations for IWD 2019, unless our sisters from the bushes and those in refugee camps can join us in these celebrations. For those who celebrate, we pray you will do so in reflection on what women truly need in our country today.
